AFROPUNK ATLANTA 2017

IT FEELS LIKE IT'S BEEN A MINUTE SINCE I'VE GONE TO A MUSIC FESTIVAL AND OCTOBER WAS THE PERFECT MONTH FOR ME TO ENJOY THIS TRIP! I BELIEVE THAT THERE ARE POINTS IN OUR LIVES WHEN WE FIND OURSELVES IN THE RIGHT PLACE, AT THE RIGHT TIME. AND I THINK THAT'S A SOUL CONNECTION, A CHECKPOINT IN OUR PATHS, A REWARD FOR HAVING MADE DECISIONS TO BETTER OUR LIVES AND ENRICH OUR EXPERIENCES. I SAY THIS WHOLEHEARTEDLY BECAUSE IT FELT LIKE A REAL "CARNIVAL OF CONSCIOUSNESS" AND I AM THANKFUL TO HAVE BEEN IN A PLACE FULL OF LIFE, LOVE, AND ONENESS. IT WAS GOOD TO BE AROUND POSITIVE ENERGY, GOOD WEATHER, AND PEOPLE THAT ACCEPT ALL THE Q'S! QUIRKINESS, QUEERNESS, AND QUEENS.

AFRO PUNK WAS FIRST A DOCUMENTARY ABOUT AFRICAN AMERICANS IN THE PUNK SCENE. THIS HIGHLIGHT BECAME A MOVEMENT FOR THE SUBCULTURE. IT WAS ABOUT CELEBRATING THE DIVERSITY AND MULTICULTURALISM WITHIN THE ALTERNATIVE MUSIC SCENE. BORN IN 2005, THE FIRST FESTIVAL TOOK PLACE AT THE BROOKLYN ACADEMY OF MUSIC. AFRO PUNK MADE ROOM FOR NEWCOMERS IN PUNK, RAP, AND SKATE CULTURE. FROM MY RESEARCH AND PERSONAL EXPERIENCE, I LEARNED THAT THIS IS A SPACE FOR INCLUSIVENESS, A PLACE FOR ONCE DEEMED MISFITS. IT'S BECOME SO MUCH MORE. BROOKLYN, PARIS, JOHANNESBURG STAND UP! THE CONCEPT BECAME AN THIS OUTLET FOR FASHION, ART, BUSINESS, POLITICS, LITERATURE, FREE THOUGHT.

"PUNK: AS IN REBEL, OPPOSING THE SIMPLE ROUTE, IMBUED WITH A DIY ETHIC, LOOKING FORWARD WITH SIMPLICITY, RAWNESS AND OPEN CURIOSITY; SEE ALSO OTHER, SEE ALSO UNDERDOG."

ATLANTA TURNT: THE EXPERIENCE

WHEN I ENTERED THE FESTIVAL, IMMEDIATELY I SAW PEOPLE ENJOYING THEMSELVES, I HEARD AFRO CUBAN/LATIN/CARIBBEAN SOUNDS. DRINKS ON DRINKS! THE FASHION STATEMENTS: I DIED!! THE FESTIVAL PROMOTED THIS IDEA OF NON-JUDGEMENT AND NON-VIOLENCE. AND WITH EVERYTHING GOING ON THIS WORLD, IT WAS SUCH A GOOD ENERGY, IT FELT SOCIALLY HEALING. EVERYONE SEEMED TO BE ON A SIMILAR WAVELENGTH, NO HATE, NO SNOBBINESS, JUST ALL THE LOVELY WOKE PEOPLE GETTING TOGETHER TO ENJOY THE SPACE.

THE SATURDAY SHOW WAS INCREDIBLE, MY FAVORITE PERFORMER WAS MIGUEL (OF COURSE!). THE LINEUP WAS AWESOME, RANGING FROM DJ OSHO, TO DANNY BROWN, TO NATIVE SUN. I FLEW HOME THE NEXT DAY, BUT SUNDAY BROUGHT THE AMAZING AND BEAUTIFUL SOLANGE, IT BROUGHT OSHUN, AND SO MANY MORE ARTISTS. YOU HAVE TO DOWNLOAD THE AFRO PUNK APP TO ACCESS THE LINEUP SO DO IT AS SOON AS THEY ANNOUNCE IT!

AS YOU GO INTO THE PARK, YOU'LL SEE OPEN AREAS FOR ACTIVISM AND SOCIAL AWARENESS, OPEN DIALOGUE AND SPEAKERS DOING TALKS ON A VARIETY OF ISSUES (CRIMINAL JUSTICE REFORM, RACE AND IDENTITY, FEMINISM, AND THE LIST GOES ON!) NOT ONLY ARE THERE PERFORMERS, BUT YOU'LL GET TO ENJOY ART SHOWS, FOOD TRUCKS AND VENDORS, SERVERS MAKING DRINKS, A "SPINTHRIFT" MARKET, AND OTHER MERCH FOR SALE! THE MARKET INCLUDES NATURAL HAIR AND SKIN PRODUCTS, JEWELRY, FASHION, HENNA, AND EVEN A HEALING TEMPLE FOR RELAXATION! YOU CAN ALSO BOOK A TRAVEL PACKAGE IF YOU WANT TO PURCHASE YOUR HOTEL AND FLIGHT TOGETHER. THEY'RE STARTING TO THINK OF EVERYTHING AND I THINK THAT'S WHY THE FESTIVAL WILL CONTINUE TO GROW!

THIS WAS PROBABLY MY FAVORITE PART ABOUT EXPLORING THE FESTIVAL. SO MANY BRAIDS, SO MUCH COLOR, TRIBAL PRINTS, PATTERNS, ACCESSORIES, CREATIVE COSTUME! IT WAS LIKE A PUNK MEETS CHIC MET GALA. YOU HAVE TO GO FOR YOURSELF TO ENJOY THIS AMAZING MECCA OF STYLE + FASHION STATEMENTS. SEE WHAT I CAPTURED BELOW!
