Breast Cancer Awareness: 34th Annual Susan G. Komen Dallas County Race For The Cure

Hi everyone, it's finally my favorite season! AND, it's also National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, so wear your pink proudly! This year, I am running the 34th Annual Susan G. Komen Dallas County Race for the Cure® on October 15th. It will be my 3rd time running the Race for the Cure and I'm really excited! This is one event that I look forward to every year and their sponsors along with the North Park Mall always put on a wonderful event. I run the 5K because I have family and friends who are or have been affected by breast cancer. So it has become quite important to me to continue to support causes that raise awareness and understanding. Breast Cancer affects so many women every year, that is why early detection saves lives. Here are a few stats from BreastCancer.org:

  • About 1 in 8 U.S. women (about 12%) will develop invasive breast cancer over the course of her lifetime.

  • In 2016, an estimated 246,660 new cases of invasive breast cancer are expected to be diagnosed in women in the U.S., along with 61,000 new cases of non-invasive (in situ) breast cancer.

  • In 2016, there are more than 2.8 million women with a history of breast cancer in the U.S. This includes women currently being treated and women who have finished treatment.

  • About 85% of breast cancers occur in women who have no family history of breast cancer. These occur due to genetic mutations that happen as a result of the aging process and life in general, rather than inherited mutations.

To lower the risk of breast cancer, be sure to eat healthy, exercise, cut out smoking, and get check-ups regularly. To register for the race, click here. I also set up a fundraiser this year, so feel free to support. This year I am running the race for my Auntie Lydia.
